Unbroken, By Laura Hillenbrand
It’s obvious that Mrs. Hillenbrand
did a lot of research leading up to the writing of this book. From the
same author that brought us “Seabiscuit” comes an amazing biography that
takes place during the dark days of WWII. It’s not even that I’m that
into history, but this book grabbed my attention from the beginning.
Because my grandfather had also served during WWII and his life was
essentially saved by the dropping of the bombs on Hiroshima and
Nagasaki, this book took on extra relevance. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic
athlete who was training for the upcoming 1940 Olympics and was on the
verge of reaching the untouchable 4-minute mile entered the service.
We
follow him on his journey as he’s left stuggling for his life after his
plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean on a rescue mission.
This is a story
about his desperation and ultimate triumph as he faced what many others
had during and after the war. A must read!
